Essential Commands Every Dog Should Know

Training your dog is essential for their safety and your peace of mind. Here are some essential commands that every dog should know and how to teach them effectively.

1. Sit

Teaching your dog to sit is one of the most basic and important commands. It helps your dog stay calm and focused. To teach your dog to sit, hold a treat close to their nose, then move your hand up, allowing their head to follow the treat. As their head moves up, their bottom should lower to the ground. Once they are in a sitting position, say “sit” and give them the treat.

2. Stay

The stay command helps keep your dog in place until you release them. Start by having your dog sit. Then, open your palm in front of you and say “stay.” Take a few steps back. If your dog stays, reward them with a treat. Gradually increase the distance and duration of the stay command.

3. Come

The come command is crucial for your dog’s safety, especially if they are off-leash. To teach your dog to come, put a leash on them and step back a few steps while saying “come.” Use a happy and encouraging tone. When your dog comes to you, reward them with a treat and praise.

4. Down

The down command is useful for keeping your dog calm and in a submissive position. Start by having your dog sit, then hold a treat close to their nose and move your hand to the floor. As your dog follows the treat, their body should lower to the ground. Once they are in the down position, say “down” and give them the treat.

5. Leave It

The leave it command helps keep your dog safe from dangerous objects or situations. To teach this command, hold a treat in both hands. Show your dog one closed hand with the treat inside and say “leave it.” Ignore any attempts by your dog to get the treat. Once they lose interest, give them the treat from the other hand.

6. Heel

The heel command keeps your dog walking beside you on a loose leash. Start by having your dog sit at your left side. Hold a treat in your right hand and say “heel” as you start walking. Reward your dog with the treat when they walk beside you without pulling.

7. Off

The off command is useful for keeping your dog from jumping on people or furniture. When your dog jumps on you or something they shouldn’t, say “off” and gently guide them down. Reward them when all four paws are on the ground.
